J.J. Abrams Discusses How Lightsaber Battles will Differ from the Prequels
With already one epic lightsaber battle promised (via the early-released footage of Finn (John Boyega) and Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) about to face off), J.J. Abrams has discussed with Empire intent on distinguishing the duels from the heavily stylised exhibits portrayed in the prequel trilogy.
"When you look at Star Wars and Empire, they are very different lightsaber battles, but for me they felt more powerful because they were not quite as slick. I was hoping to go for something much more primitive, aggressive and rougher, a throwback to the kind of heart-stopping lightsaber fights I remembered being so enthralled by as a kid."
Apart from setting a distance between itself and the prequels, this direction also makes narrative sense, considering that in the time period The Force Awakens takes place, the Jedi have become barely existent, and any potential Jedi that may discover the force will do so with a fair amount of awkwardness we'd have to predict.
With plenty of theories surrounding Finn and Kylo Ren's positions, and whether both or either of them are Jedi (Sith), we'll have to wait and see what the truth is. We can, however, expect less of a dance and more of a brawl in episode 7.
