J.J. Abrams Discusses Why 'That' Death Had to Happen in The Force Awakens
Villain Kylo Ren made enemies all over the world in the third act of Star Wars: The Force Awakens when he murdered his own father, and everyone's most beloved smuggler.
J.J. Abrams has recently spoken out about the decision to kill of Han Solo, and what it means for the franchise going forward.
"Long before we had this title, the idea of The Force Awakens was that this would become the evolution of not just a hero, but a villain. Star Wars had the greatest villain in cinema history. So, how you bring a new villain into that world is a very tricky thing. We knew we needed to do something f—king bold.
"The only reason why Kylo Ren has any hope of being a worthy successor is because we lose one of the most beloved characters." Abrams also went on to say, while talking to Uproxx, that Han Solo's story may have plateaued if he'd been kept alive. In the sense that Luke's return to the franchise is all but assured, it's easy to see how the focal trio from the original trilogy may have spent a lot of time fighting for the screen in the coming sequel(s).
In any case, the direction they've gone with have cut and ties between the audience and Kylo Ren, whose downward spiral seems to have reached rock bottom. Will he survive out the entire trilogy?
