J.J. Abrams No Longer Interested in Reboots and Remakes
J.J. Abrams has a long and successful history of restoring classic franchises on the big screen, from Star Trek to Star Wars, Mission: Impossible, and more. Now, though, the acclaimed director is ready to step away from that career trajectory, which seems like the directing equivalent of type-casting.
During the Golden Globes, representing Westworld (another reboot), for which he is an executive producer, he spoke with People to point toward new directions in the coming years. He's now ready to make his own work that someone else might want to reboot one day.
"You know, I feel incredibly lucky to have gotten involved in things that I loved when I was a kid. In fact, even Westworld, which we’re here for tonight, is one of them. But I don’t feel any desire to do that again. I feel like I’ve done enough of that that I’m more excited about working on things that are original ideas that perhaps one day someone else will have to reboot.
"You know, I do think that if you’re telling a story that is not moving anything forward, not introducing anything that’s relevant, that’s not creating a new mythology or an extension of it, then a complete remake of something feels like a mistake."
Barring another Star Trek Into Darkness, fans will be sure to lap up whatever Abrams looks to next.
