Justin Hurwitz's 'La La Land' Score Frontrunner for Oscars Category
While Johann Johannsson is disqualified for his Arrival score, due to one track being a pre-existing piece by Max Richter, there are a few other notable scores to look out for as we head toward Oscars night.
The frontrunner looks to be Justin Hurwitz's wondrous music for La La Land, with a number of tunes harking back to Hollywood of old. But he'll see some stiff competition from John Williams. The famed musician won his fiftieth nomination for last year's The Force Awakens, and this year its The BFG, another Spielberg collaboration.
Not to mention, there's also Nicholas Britell's Moonlight soundtrack, and Mica Levi on Jackie. Dario Marianelli's Kubo and the Two Strings work manages to stay in the shadows of Oscar predictions, but is a likely candidate, as well as Mark Mancina's Moana. work. Animated films have had a huge year, and their musicians have equally earned their pay cheques.
Johannsson's Arrival score was a gorgeous and chilling work, and it's unfortunate that it fell short. Having not seen La La Land yet, I can't comment on Hurwitz's music, but there's been some impressive things said about it so far.
