Kingsman Star Sofia Boutella in the Lead for The Mummy Titular Character
Sofia Boutella, having played roles in Star Trek Beyond and most notably Kingsman: The Secret Service, is in talks to play the Mummy in the upcoming reboot.
As long as negotiations are successful, Boutella will be the first female monster in Universal's new universe. She'll follow in the footsteps of Boris Karloff (1932( and Arnold Vosloo (1999).
Directed by Alex Kurtzman and based on a script by Jon Spaihts (Doctor Strange), The Mummy is set to launch the monsters universe and set the groundwork for forthcoming projects based on Dracula, Frankenstein, the Invisible Man, and the Bride of Frankenstein.
THR backed up reports via Variety that claim Tom Cruise will play a starring role in the film. It looks as though Boutella and Cruise will play opposite one another, though it's not been made clear whether the monster will actually play a protagonist or antagonistic role yet. While we can assume that the Mummy is the villain, it'd be interesting to see it turned on its head.
The Mummy reboot creeps into cinemas March 24, 2017.
