'Knight Rider' Returning to Screens Via Machinima Series Lead by Justin Lin
1980s action series Knight Rider is headed back thanks to Machinima. The digital network announced a partnership with producer/director Justin Lin as they look to produce a reboot set for a 2017 release.
Lin is known for Fast and Furious 6 as well as Star Trek Beyond, so he's no stranger to major franchise revitalisations or continuations. He'll be producing the now in-production series. He's also heading up Legendary Pictures' Hot Wheels feature film.
Warner Bros. is Machinima's backer but NBCU is the partner on this particular project. NB aired the original series, which ran four seasons from 1982 to 1986.
“Knight Rider is an iconic franchise whose concepts of AI and autonomous vehicles were science fiction in the 1980s and are now science fact,” CEO Chad Gutstein said. “Justin is one of the leading storytellers of his generation and we couldn’t be more excited to work with him on re-invigorating Knight Rider for a new generation of fans.”
