'La La Land' Ties Oscar Record, Director Damien Chazelle Left "Speechless"
La La Land has just tied the record for most Oscar nominations with La La Land, sitting alongside All About Eve and Titanic and going down in history. Now all that's left for it to do is win some of them. Director Damien Chazelle responded to the news, calling in from Beijing during promotion for the film's release over thehre.
“When you mention those movies, it makes my head spin even more than it’s spinning,” he said. "I'm a little speechless." He went on to discuss the news, though it's clear that he's less comfortable when praise is being heaped on top of him.
"The one thing I can say without sounding like a stuttering maniac is this means that so many people who came together to make this movie for me have been recognized, and that just means the world to me,” he says. “I got to see firsthand how much work and inventiveness and sleepless nights they brought to this movie. I’m filled with gratitude.”
Chazelle's previous film, Whiplash, won three Oscars, and at 32 years old, he's a director who is going to be one to watch for many years to come. His next project, First Man, will see Ryan Gosling portray the first man on the moon, in a biopic that has surprisingly yet to get made.
“In a weird way I guess I’m not even thinking too far into the future at this moment,” he says. “You’re stunned and in a daze and you have no choice but to live in the present. I just feel like I’m right here, right now. Maybe this means it’s going to be one long, inexorable decline after this. But I hope not!”
