Les Affamés

'Les Affamés' brings the zombies to beautiful rural Quebec (TIFF review)

burnsting burnsting Editor-in-chief With about a dozen recent series covering the same subject, director Robin Aubert still manages to make his indie zombie flick feel fresh in his home territory Quebec.

'Les Affamés' is quite traditional in its take on zombies. No fancy zombies, just the infection and then, you know, trying to eat other people. Oh, and the zombies are obsessed with stacked trash, or chairs too.

Set in rural Quebec, we follow Bonin and his friend Vézina on patrol, having a laugh, but eventually surrounded by the infected. As he doesn't survive the eventual attack, Bonin continues his path and picks up different characters along the way. Among them a little girl, and a woman called Tania, with a bite-mark she claims to have gotten from a dog.

While the film starts pretty light initially, the extreme existential story gets dark and darker and not many are able to survive. It brings some depth to the story, but that's about it.

If you're a fan of the genre, this is definitely one to see, if only for the beautiful settings, the great tone and visuals. If you're looking for an incredible story though, this is probably not for you.
