Lionsgate Acquires Rights to Magic Tree House Novels
Lionsgate will begin development on big-screen adaptations of the Magic Tree House book series, after having acquired the rights and with the intent of developing various live-action films to be released by its Summit Entertainment label.
The series is made up of 54 volumes, written by Mary Pope Osborne. Osborne will executive produce alongside her husband Will Osborne. Having sold 130 million books and been translated into 35 different languages (and with a musical with worldwide acclaim to boot), it was probably sooner or later that it would become an acquired property.
The series focuses on a brother and sister who discover a mysterious tree house, within which they find a collection of books that transports them through history. In today's special effects age, this sounds like a perfect fit.
Will Osborne and Jenny Laird have written the script for the first installment, which is based on the 29th book, Christmas in Camelot.
