'Logan' Sets March Opening Record for R-Rated Film
Logan has pulled in $88.3 million at the U.S. box office in its opening weekend, belting out X-Men: Apocalypse's $65.8 million and becoming the top R-rated opening in March history.
Overseas, the film has opened to an estimated $152.5 million in 81 markets, reports THR. That brings the tally globally to an estimated $240.8 million.
How studios will try and replicate its success is unclear. While Deadpool offers an entirely new world with its R-rated launch, Logan is an ending to a character that kicked off his story 17 years ago, and it's hard to measure its success as a solo film except as a modern western (which is possibly a harder sell to the folks holding the cash).
Either way, Logan is soaring at the moment, and with it and Deadpool being two of the last three X-Men films, it should start pushing some outside-the-box thinking when it comes to superhero properties.
