From La Femme Nikita and The Professional to The Fifth Element, writer/director Luc Besson has created some of the toughest, most memorable female action heroes in cinematic history. Now, Besson directs Scarlett Johansson in Lucy, an action-thriller that tracks a woman accidentally caught in a dark deal who turns the tables on her captors and transforms into a merciless warrior evolved beyond human logic.
Prediction
As much as we’d like Lucy to do well this summer, it will be a very hard task. It’s a new potential franchise that will go up against established, huge money makers like Transformers, Planet of the Apes and How to Train Your Dragon to name a few. Johansson’s stock has risen since the release of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and Luc Besson is due a hit, but the market place just seems too cluttered for Lucy to frankly stand-out and bring in big money. Will it be a good film? It probably will be a fairly entertaining watch, but it’ll no doubt get squashed by some big hitters.
