Lupita Nyong'o Chess Drama 'Queene of Katwe' Set for Award-Season Release
Upcoming Disney chess drama Queen of Katwe, starring Lupita Nyong'o, has been given an award-season release date, opening limited on September 23 before expanding on the 30th.
Directed by Mira Nair and scripted by William Wheeler (based on the book by Tim Crother), Queen of Katwe is the story of a young girl who sells corn on the streets of rural Uganda and whose world changes immensely with the introduction of Chess into her life. Receiving the support of her family and community, she is instilled with the confidence to pursue her dream of becoming an international chess champion.
Nyong'o plays the mother of the young chess prodigy, Pihona Mutesi, who is played by Madina Nalwanga. Nyong'o comes off of Oscar victory with 12 Years a Slave, followed by a role in last year's Star Wars revival.
