The Best and Worst Sport Films  6/7

America’s Favourite Pastime

In recent years American Football has become the topic of choice among many filmmakers but all the while baseball still remains America’s favourite pastime. Baseball has been the topic of many films in the past, especially during the 1970’s and 1980’s when films such as Bang The Drum Slowly, Bull Durham and Fields Of Dreams where showcased on the silver screen to great success. During that time there were some rather huge flops such as Summer Catch, Babe, The Scout and Ed starring Friends star Matt LeBlanc alongside a chimp, need I say more. For many men in America, baseball was a boyhood rite of passage and served as the backdrop to some of their most cherished memories. It wasn’t until 2011, with Bennett Miller’s Moneyball, that a truly memorable and touching baseball film was made.

Best Representation: Moneyball

In 2002, the Oakland Athletics, the poorest team in Major League Baseball at the time, put together a team of has-beens and unknowns on the cheap and went on a 20 game winning streak, setting an all time record. Billy Beane (Brad Pitt), went on to become a hero in Oakland and rejected a multi-million dollar contract to become head coach of the Boston Red Sox. Moneyball is three things for me. First, it’s one of Brad Pitt’s best, if not, best performances of his career. Secondly, it shows Jonah Hill is more than a comedic actor, he is an excellent supporting actor. And thirdly, it proves sport films can be intelligent, smart and powerful.
