Maisie Williams on Playing Arya blind for Game of Thrones Season 6
Game of Thrones is back, so fans the world over can breath a sigh of relief and reside in the fact that they only have to wait seven long days between each new hour.
Maisie Williams as Arya Stark has a severe change for the new season, with the character losing her eyesight following her cliffhanger plot-thread of last year.
The actress spoke with the New York Times, discussing playing blind among other things Game of Thrones related. "You can’t comprehend being without your eyes, and you have to put your faith and trust in the people around you, who are also the ones who put you in that position. She has no other choice.
"So that’s a really interesting position to see her in, because she’s never had to trust someone. It’s a very vulnerable place for her to be at the beginning of the series, but things will turn around."
Asked about Arya's transformation from season 5 to now, Williams described the character as "shallow" during last year. "Arya was quite shallow. “I’m gonna be a sick killer and then have my list, and I’m gonna go back and avenge my family.” It was such a childish way of thinking about it. Then she got there and realized this isn’t a joke; this isn’t like a holiday camp your parents send you off to."
Williams admits fans might find Arya's early plot for this season a little lackluster, but promises plenty ahead. She also described acting blind as something not nearly as difficult as it might sound.
"For a lot of the close-ups, I had contact lenses that were opaque, so I couldn’t see anything anyway. For the fight scenes, I had contact lenses I could see through. But that was more of a health and safety thing, because I was wielding a stick and poor Faye didn’t want to get hit in the face. But she still did."
Game of Thrones airs Sundays at 9PM on HBO.
