'Manchester By The Sea' Leads the Way With 4 Nominations at 2016 Gotham Awards
Kenneth Lonergan's Manchester By The Sea leads the way in this year's Gotham Awards — the indie award show, and first major awards of the season — which is run by the Independent Filmmaker Project (IFC).
Manchester By The Sea was nominated for a total of four awards including Best Feature, Best Screenplay (written by Lonergan), Best Actor (Casey Affleck) and Best Breakthrough (Lucas Hedges). Manchester By The Sea is expected to score very well across all major awards this year, and Gotham is a great start for the hit movie. Toronto favorite Moonlight scored well by landing nods for Best Feature, Screenplay and a special acting award for the film’s cast. The Gotham's are particularly hot in the Best Actress category, with many expecting the names nominated here to be strongly fighting it out for an Oscar.
The Gotham Awards are a great indicator of how indie films may fare in February's Oscars. In the past, The Hurt Locker and Birdman performed well at the Gotham Awards and both went on to Best Picture success at the Academy Awards.
