Matt Damon On What to Expect in 'Jason Bourne', Teases "Darker, Unresolved" Places
Bourne is back in a big way with the Super Bowl spot released yesterday, diminishing sour memories of The Bourne Legacy while speeding anticipation for the next chapter right up.
Matt Damon has been absent from the franchise since 2007, and his role is an integral part of what makes this next film so exciting. Talking with EW, Damon discussed how Jason Bourne will build on the first three films:
"He's living with the same things as he was before, and then goes to find Julia Stiles' character, who basically says, 'Just because you remember everything, doesn't mean you know everything.' So you find him in a place that's dark and unresolved.
"This is the completion of this journey that started in The Bourne Identity. It's part of the first three, it's not a whole new chapter. It feels like the conclusion, even though we're not saying it's the conclusion, it feels like the conclusion of my identity journey. It goes deeper than Ultimatum, basically."
Damon discussed the location choices, and how they ground Bourne in our world while also feeling like an alternate reality. "The last one was set in London, Madrid, and New York. And subconsciously, those places were places where there were terrorist attacks. This movie opens with an austerity riot in Athens, and that's very much by design."
On Alicia Vikander's role, Damon aptly said "...Alicia is our great and new," describing her as a "specialist in cyber."
Jason Bourne opens July 29.
