Matt Damon Talks the Need for Time Between Bourne Films, Discusses Filming Locations
While many doubted the return of the Bourne franchise for quite some time (and many fans probably disregard The Bourne Legacy in that conversation), Matt Damon is indeed back in the role of the amnesiac operative and under the direction of Paul Greengrass.
Speaking with Variety, Damon opened up about what kept him from the franchise up until now, ever since 2007's concluding film in the trilogy.
"I wasn't giving up on doing it," Damon said, explaining that he was unsure of a way to go for the character or the franchise from there. "Paul and I kind of talked years ago about perhaps the way forward was just to let time pass and allow the world to change a little."
"You'll find the character - like "The Bourne Ultimatum", the third act actually in the movie dovetails with the third act of "The Bourne Supremacy". So technically, when the character disappears, it's still 2004. So when the next one comes out in '16, it will have been 12 years - in movie years - that the character has been off the grid."
"...what's happened in those intervening years gives you a story." Damon talked about the locations in which the film was being shot, listing off Tenerife, "which is supposed to be Athens. It would be like a nighttime riot scene to kind of start the movie." They then filmed in England, Berlin, and D.C... before Vegas for the third act.
