'Maybe I Do' Review
“Maybe I Do” stars six celebrated actors, paired-up in three groupings:
– Richard Gere and Susan Sarandon (who previously co-starred together in “Shall We Dance?” and “Arbitrage”) play the older couple involved in an affair, which is now in its fourth month.
– Emma Roberts and Luke Bracey (leads in 2020 Netflix rom-com “Holidate”) play the young couple contemplating taking their relationship to the next level.
– Diane Keaton and William H. Macy (both part of the ensemble in Woody Allen’s “Radio Days”) play two senior loners looking for love, who just may be perfect for each other.
Not long into this would-be rom-com these three pairings morph into two groups, and, eventually, all six people come together, forming one, dysfunctional unit.
“Maybe I Do”, from writer/director Michael Jacobs (based on his own play), is a series uninteresting, unfunny, unoriginal and uninspiring conversations about love. None of the actors give inspired efforts or appear to be having a good time. It’s obvious vets Gere and Sarandon are “playing parts”. Roberts and Macy sort of try, but Bracey is zoned-out throughout.
As for Keaton, this completes her triple crown of recent cringeworthy comedies, joining “Love, Weddings & Other Disasters” (in which she played a blind character for laughs) and “Mack & Rita” (in which she embodied a 30-year-old). Here’s hoping this summer’s “Book Club: The Next Chapter” gets her career back on track before it’s too late.
On top of the performance issues, “Maybe I Do” features a script packed with cornball dialogue, predictable, painfully long scenes and shoddy editing.
