'CANDYMAN' Official Trailer: Jordan Peele's spiritual sequel instantly hooks
So many questions and so little answers in a trailer that reveals just enough to make you expect the unexpected.
The first footage of Jordan Peele and Nia DaCosta’s spiritual sequel features Yayha Abdul Mateen II deconstructing the rules of Cabrini Green’s urban legend to his onscreen girlfriend played by Teyonah Parris “The urban legend is, say his name five times while looking in the mirror. He appears in the reflection and it kills you.”
In sobering fashion, Parris’ character wisely proclaims “Who would do that!?”
The trailer immediately cuts to a scene where a group of millennial coeds are foolishly summoning the very spirit who eventually appears out of nowhere to slaughter the very voices who summoned him.
Yes, this is just the icing on top of what looks to be a deliciously layered and nuanced spiritual sequel that picks up 28-years after the series’ original events. Mateen II co-stars as Anthony McCoy, a hipster visual artist who feels a spiritual connection with Chicago’s once unrecognizable housing projects, now home of luxury condos. But it’s McCoy’s obsession - and possible connection - with the legend of Candyman that leads him down a path of destruction. Has Candyman come to collect or is he looking for a successor?
Though it’s not explicitly stated in either trailer or plot synopsis, perhaps our answers date back to Candyman’s attempt to abduct McCoy as an infant back in Bernard Rose’s 1992 film. But why now? And who is the faceless figure terrorizing those who summon its name? Sure we know it could be the resurrection of Tony Todd. But perhaps the rules have changed?
We shall find out when Candyman hits theaters June 12, 2020
