Neill Blomkamp suggests Peter Weller may return for MGMs 'RoboCop Returns'

GregHarmon GregHarmon Managing Editor After two lackluster sequels and 2014’s forgettable reboot, MGM hopes to revitalize a brand of greed, corruption, and authoritarianism that's synonymous with Paul Verhoeven's unforgettable science-fiction classic, RoboCop.

Less than a month ago, MGM announced they are developing a new installment of RoboCop with sci-fi helmer Neill Blomkamp set to direct from a script written by 1987's original co-writers, Michael Miner and Ed Neumeier. Since then, I’ve tucked this away under - come back to me when Peter Weller ever reprises Alex Murphy aka RoboCop.

Well, it appears Peter Weller may return, this according to Neill Blomkamp!

In a fan Tweet asking who should play RoboCop, the District 9 director responded with one name and one name only: Peter Weller.

While Blomkamp’s response certainly elicits a bit of excitement, the skeptic in me says Weller’s name drop is likely driven out of pure desire. But the optimist in me says perhaps there’s truth to Blomkamp’s tweet and it's only a matter of time until they reach a contractual agreement with the 71-year-old actor? Weller was last on the scene back in 2015, with a role in Dolph Lundgren's Skin Game. He also directed an episode of Sleepy Hollow.

I'm not expecting Blomkamp's RoboCop to supplant Verhoeven's grand entry but, at the very least, I am mildly interested to see what screenwriter Justin Rhodes (Terminator 6) does with Miner and Newmeier’s original sequel script.

In the meantime, Blomkamp will be kicking off production on his latest sci-fi thriller Greenland starring Chris Evans in October.
