Netflix Eyeing David Ayer and Will Smith Feature Project 'Bright'
Netflix's stakes in the TV market are not small, and the streaming service has become an enormous success on the back of their slate of original programming. With plenty to come from the company while it continues to pump out some of TV's greatest current shows, they aren't looking to shy away from the big screen.
THR reports that Netflix has its eye on Bright, the supernatural cop thriller coming from Suicide Squad director David Ayer, which is set to star Will Smith and Joel Edgerton. The script is written by Max Landis, and while the deal is reportedly far from done, Netflix is at the top of the bidding war and are currently negotiating the rights to the property.
Bright takes place in a world where magical creatures and humans co-exist, and a special divison of the police handles supernatural-related crimes. Smith plays a human cop who teams up with an Orc to find a powerful wand that is highly sought after.
Netflix is coming off of its successful Beasts of No Nation, with saw it break into the film world and starred Idris Elba in a role many believe to have been Oscar-nomination worthy.
