No Oscars Host? No Problem. Oscars and ABC Producing Team Are Paging 'Avengers'
Consolation for The Academy dumping the proposed Outstanding Achievement in Popular Film category.
With just six weeks to go until the 91st annual Academy Awards ceremony, it appears ABC and The Academy are forging ahead without an official host and instead, plan to feature a crop of A-list stars - including Marvel’s star-studded superheroes - Avengers!
Sources from The Hollywood Reporter are reporting Oscars producers, Donna Gigliotti and Glenn Weiss, have plans to line up appearances from “as many big-name cast members from Marvel’s sprawling Avengers franchise as possible”. This news coincides with contingency plans, barring a last minute miracle, for The Academy to feature a show led by high-profile stars including this year’s soon-to-be announced nominees performing skits along with the usual musical performances.
The Academy has not confirmed this latest news but sources say details including which of Marvel’s actors/characters will appear and how they’ll be incorporated are still being “hammered out” - pun or no pun intended. While it may be for just one segment or multiple, this news feels like a no-brainer for both ABC and Disney leading up to the releases of Captain Marvel and Avengers: Endgame.
I for one wouldn't mind seeing The Academy and ABC recruit everyone who has appeared in the MCU to play a part in whatever they've got cooking.
