It's always been a wonder why there hasn't been a definitive bio-pic on legendary guitarist Jimi Hendrix. It's not that studios have tried to make one happen, it seems stumbling blocks have always got in the way. Many have been in development over the years with last years 'Jimi: All Is By My Side' being the only one to breakthrough.
'Jimi: All Is By My Side' isn't a bad film. It didn't get the favourable reaction from audiences that executives wanted, with one of the biggest criticisms of the movie being no use of Hendrix's music. But all that may be about to change.
Deadline reports that Legendary Entertainment and the Experience Hendrix estate have made a deal, and the key factor is the green light to use the artist’s songs. Paul Greengrass (Captain Phillips) is wanted by he studio to direct the movie, which has been in development for a number of years.
Legendary have been wanting to make this movie for some time and got Greengrass onboard a few years back, but the biggest problem with the project moving forward was obtaining the rights to the music.
It's worth noting that Greengrass hasn't fully signed up to direct the movie, but is in talks and seems keen on the project. As for who'll portray the guitarist, Anthony Mackie was originally eyed but with his hectic schedule with Marvel, there is question marks on his availability.
The script is to be written by Scott Silver (The Fighter). The producers will include Thomas Tull, Jon Jashni, Janie Hendrix, John McDermott, and Peter Afterman, with Jillian Share and Josh Bratman executive producing.
