Producer Discusses Minecraft Movie, Target Audience, Production Hopes
Minecraft is often pitted against LEGO as a kind of rival, and the similarities are warranted. For the films, though, Roy Lee is making the jump, but keeping one foot in each territory. Having produced The LEGO Movie, he's currently heavily working on building Minecraft into an equally successful franchise.
Speaking at DICE 2016, Lee explained that Mojang, the minds behind Minecraft, are heavily involved in the development. "So they know everything is going to be in the movie that can give us insight into future updates so we can put things into the movie around the same time.
"So I don't know exactly what things are going into the game, but they know exactly what's going into the movie."
Lee believes the film will go into production later this year, with Rob McElhnney deep into scripting and who has already signed on to direct. Lee confirmed a target audience similar to that of a Jurassic World, which could potentially mean a PG-13 rating.
As for a logline, Lee said this. "Minecraft would be part of a multiverse where humans can enter that has the feel of what the live action version of a Minecraft experience [would be like]."
