Quentin Tarantino Elaborates on His Retirement, and Reveals Why 'Inglourious Basterds' Nearly Didn't Happen
Speaking at the Jerusalem Film Festival, The Hateful Eight director Quentin Tarantino reiterated again his intent on retiring from filmmaking after ten movies, which leaves two to go, but he states he may return at 75 with "another story to tell."
In the candid interview, Tarantino revealed that there is only one shot he's ever taken directly from another film, that being from Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho. "I think that may be the only shot that I’ve taken from another movie exactly,” he said.
The acclaimed director nearly scrapped Inglourious Basterds, he revealed, when he couldn't find an actor for Hans Landa, whom he considers the best character he's ever written. This panic was abolished with German actor Christoph Waltz's arrival.
“It was obvious that he was the guy; he could do everything. He was amazing, he gave us our movie back.” On the qualities an actor must inhabit, he said that “I’m looking for that take where an actor just kicks into something — actors describe it as flying, they’re not them anymore, it’s the reason they become actors.”
