'Red Mars' TV Adaptation Coming from J. Michael Straczynski
The creator of Babylon 5 looks set to head back out to space with an adaptation of the popular book series, from Kim Stanley Robinson, The Mars Trilogy.
After gravity kept his feet to the ground with his last sci-fi series, Sense8, Straczynski is looking to the skies again. He's all set to both write and executive produce the series for Spike, who announced the Red Mars TV series through a press release. The project has already been given a straight-to-series ten episode order.
Vince Gerardis (Game of Thrones) approached Spike with the property and will act as an executive producer alongside Straczynski. The book series consists of Red Mars, Green Mars, and Blue Mars, and were both critical and commercial hits, and have achieved many awards including the Hugo and Nebula prize.
Included with Spike's press release is a description of the series: 'Red Mars' follows the first settlers charged with terraformring a mysterious planet, all of whom have competed to be a part of the mission.. The series delves into the lives of these relative strangers, cut off from everything they've ever known and living in the harshest environment imaginable. Over time, viewers will witness the mind-blowing evolution of humans and technology as they learn to adapt in their inhospitable home.
Red Mars will enter production Summer 2016 for a January 2017 premiere.
