Ridley Scott Talks 'The Martian', How 'Star Wars' Brought About 'Alien'
With 'The Martian' meeting rave reviews in its festival premiere ahead of its worldwide release, Ridley Scott spoke with Deadline about the film and his career in general.
On 'The Martian', he talked about how easy the project was, and how he simply received a completed script, and loved it, and so decided it was his next project. Guess that's what happens when you're made famous by classic sci-fi and horror work.
That ease with which he can construct a film, he said, is for the fact that he possesses the ability to visualise exactly what he is reading.
On whether Matt Damon could hold audience attention in the same manner as Sandra Bullock and Tom Hanks, as two examples, Scott was adamant that he was the man for the job.
"I've watched everything he's done and... he never does anything just because he thinks it's going to be commercial.
"Story is as important to him as it is with me."
Having been lined up to at one point direct 'I Am Legend', Scott said that he gravitates toward the solitary individuals, and that's evident in almost all of his films.
Scott talks about George Lucas' "seminal" original 'Star Wars' film, and how that was at the time a total contrast to '2001: A Space Odyssey". Where 'Star Wars' is more of a fairy tale, '2001' is a deep exploration. Scott stated that 'Alien' too was made as a kind of contrast to 'Star Wars', coming two years later.
'Star Wars' had such an impact on Scott that it made him miserable, and when he was offered Alien he gave a resounding yes. As Deadline's interview puts it, 'Alien' is a result of 'Star Wars', and 'Star Wars' is a result of '2001: A Space Odyssey'.
Three of the greatest films of all time right there on a string. 'The Martian' is out October 2.
