'Rogue One' Director Compares Tone to 'The Empire Strikes Back'
One of the most popular and overused comparisons to make in this day and age is to The Empire Strikes Back. Many producers, directors, actors love to point the binoculars at one of the most iconic sequels of all time when promoting their own, which makes sense.
But Gareth Edwards has probably made the comparison that makes more sense than any other of those in the past when he says that Rogue One is tonally similar to The Empire Strikes Back. "We essentially got the license to be different on this movie," Edwards said.
"With a standalone film, we don't really have to exist for other movies to continue, so we could be brave, adn that's what we did. In terms of Star Wars that I love, I guess we'd be aiming for The Empire Strikes Back [in tone]. While our movie takes itself quite seriously, there's a lot of fun and humor in it, and hope is the key thing," the director said. "It's about trying to achieve something."
On the diverse cast of characters, he wanted them there with the sole purpose of helping to move the story forward. "The story of this movie is having all these different people from all these different places and backgrounds who have very little in common, they all believe in a good future for the world," he said."We just tried to make the most realistic version of Star Wars that we've ever seen."
The film hits theaters on December 16, 2016.
