'Rogue One' Director Gives New Details on "Working Class" Villain
Ben Mendelsohn plays Director Orson Krennic in Rogue One, and he won't be the kind of villain we're used to in the Star Wars franchise. That's clear already - for one, he doesn't where a cool, shiny helmet, nor does he carry a lightsaber used by baddies.
Darth Vader's presence is sure to be more background noise as Krennic takes the spotlight. The character is "much more working-class," director Gareth Edwards said in an interview with USAToday. His rise through the empire "through sheer force of personality and ideas."
"He hits a brick wall in the hierarchy where they won't let him in the club, and it's going to turn into a them-or-us situation: either Krennic or Tarkin and the others," Edwards said. It seems the Imperial elite don't want a lower-level such as Krennic in their gang, despite his proven value.
On having Darth Vader on-set, the character himself is an imposing figure despite the fact that it's a guy in a suit. “It’s like we're at the playground again and there’s this hero sort of standing there,” Edwards told the paper. “You end up very respectful of him: Even though you know there’s a guy inside the outfit, you still talk to him like he’s Vader.”
