'Rogue One' Opens Considerably Shorter than 'The Force Awakens' in China
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story has made its debut in China, and earned a solid $9.7 million at the box office on Friday. Despite those numbers not being poor by any means, it is still very short of The Force Awakens, which earned $27.8 million on its Saturday opening day.
For its opening two-day weekend, it finished with $53.2 million in the Middle Kingdom. Thursday night screenings puts Rogue One up at $10.4 million, though it must be noted that only $15.4 million was earned across all movies in the nation on Friday, and may be the cost of heavy smog spreading across the country.
The Force Awakens ended up taking $124 million at the Chinese box office. Though not record-breaking, it's considered a success. With the remainder of its opening weekend still to come, and bot of its Chinese stars having done promotional duty in the nation prior to Christmas, there's still a chance those figures will bump up by Monday.
