Rogue One Reshoot Update: Disney Reassures Fans, Brings Clarity to Reports
Early in the week it was reported that Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was heading back for expensive reshoots and the film may be in some trouble. Page Six reported that these reshoots were in response to negative opinions on the final product from Disney executives and test screenings.
THR cleared up the following day that the film had not been put to test screenings, and likely never will, and executives felt that the movie was tonally off and wanted to realign it with their vision of a modern but classic Star Wars pic, as opposed to a war film.
Rumours of Christopher McQuarrie taking over reshoots have been quashed today. McQuarrie stated in response to these rumours that "if there are any reshoots on Rogue One, I'm not supervising them. For any outlet to say so is not only wrong, it's irresponsible.
"Gareth Edwards is a talented filmmaker who deserves the benefit of the doubt.Making a film - let along a Star Wars chapter - is hard enough without the internet trying to deliberately downgrade one's years of hard work. Who does that even serve? Let him make his movie in peace."
EW has reached out to Disney, who have confirmed that the film is "undergoing four to five weeks of reshoots, beginning this month and ending just days before the Star Wars Celebration fan event in London on July 15."
Additionally, reshoots were scheduled for the film before principal production commenced, and they are now standard practice for large-scale films to plan for additional shooting in order for filmmakers to tweak after the first assembly cut, should it be needed.
“The changes have everything to do with clarity and character development and all take place [as inserts] within scenes we’ve already shot,” said one source on the project.
The film opens December 16, and we can all relax a little in the wake of these reassuring reports.
