'Rogue One's Epic Darth Vader Sequence Nearly Didn't Happen
Of all the reshoots we might hear about in the wake of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, there's one that will forever stand out as an absolute necessity in the minds of fans everywhere. That final sequence, in which Darth Vader is returned to his former, terrifying glory, was actually added in at the last minute, editor John Gilroy told Yahoo Movies.
“What was added — and it was a fantastic add — was the Vader action scene, with him boarding the ship and dispatching all those rebel soldiers. That was something conceptualized a little later.” GIlroy adds that, as far as he knew, the climax of the film was mostly always the plan, from gaining access to the Death Star plans to beaming them to a Rebel ship and into the hands of Princess Leia. "As far as I know that was always the plan… the main structure was there.”
“It was a really great punch in the arm and something I think fans wanted to see," he said of the addition of Vader's epic one-man slaughter of the rebels. Daniel Naprous was brought in to play Vader in the reshoot, following Spencer Wilding having prior to that played the character in the sequence involving Vader and Orson Krennic. James Earl Jones of course provided the voicework.
