'Rogue One's' Sequel is 'A New Hope': Won't Be Getting a Follow-Up
The question had to be asked, and in the latest issue of Empire Magazine, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has addressed the possibility of a sequel to the upcoming Star Wars story Rogue One, which takes place prior to the very first Star Wars adventure.
Jokingly referring to it as Rogue Two, she has confirmed that there will be no Rogue One sequel. It was, she says, always intended as a standalone film, despite it acting as something of a prequel to A New Hope.
Director Gareth Edwards also added that if there were a sequel, it "will be directed by George Lucas," referencing A New Hope. It's a good sign, given that these anthology films can offer the charm of one-off films that exist in between the long-running epic that Disney and Lucasfilm are telling.
Some time back, Kennedy said that the standalone films "are not designed to necessarily build new franchises" but instead will "very definitely have a beginning, middle, and end." It's an oft-unheard of concept in an age of blockbuster, expanded universe franchises.
