Rumor: Miles Morales to Headline Sony's animated Spider-Man movie
While Peter Parker was recently introduced to the MCU in Captain America: Civil War, Sony will introduce Miles Morales in their standalone animated feature. According to Umberto Gonzales (Editor In Chief of Heroic Hollywood), a Tom Rothman (chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment Motion Picture Group) quote at last year's Cinemacon points to Miles Morales headlining the animated feature:
"The film will exist independently of the projects in the live-action Spider-Man universe, all of which are continuing," said Rothman. This indicates that the animated Spider-Man movie isn't set within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Gonzales's sources also provided two working titles for the film: The Ultimate Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Miles Morales: The Ultimate Spider-Man. Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (The Lego Movie, 21 Jump Street) are set to direct the movie dated for a December 21, 2018 release.
For those unfamiliar with Miles Morales, he is the half Black and half Puerto Rican science nerd created by acclaimed comic book writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist Sara Pichelli. Morales's version of Spider-Man was used to relaunch the Ultimate Spider-Man comic book series in late 2011. His journey to balance the Miles persona and the Spider-Man persona mirrored his initial reluctance and eventual proud acceptance of being biracial.
