Ryan Murphy's Next Anthology Series 'Feud' Gets Official Title, Release Date
Ryan Murphy is set to drop his third anthology series for FX this year. Titled Feud: Bette and Joan, the series is a dramatic retelling of the rivalry between Joan Crawford and Bette Davis, who cast aside their feelings to collaborate on 1962 cult classic What Ever Happened to Baby Jane.
Jessica Lange plays Joan while Susan Sarandon plays Bette in the first installment of the new series, and they and Murphy spoke on behalf of the new series at the TV Critics Association. Lange called the series a "“microcosm of what happens to women generally as they age, whether they become invisible, or unattractive, or undesirable."
Murphy called Feud "something much more delicate and moving" when asked of its layers of camp, apparently disgruntled by the allusion. "What happened to both women was painful," he said, and insisted that the show is "doing something deeper and emotional and painful."
Lange, who is clearly taking the project seriously and deeply personally, said that "nothing has really changed," emphasizing that, what women were going through then, "women are still going through today."
The new series, made up of eight episodes, debuts on Sunday, March 5. It also stars Stanley Tucci, Alfred Molina, Judy Davis, and Dominic Burgess.
