Save the date: 'John Wick 3' coming May 2019

GregHarmon GregHarmon Managing Editor Mark your calendars. Lionsgate and Thunder Road Pictures have set a release date for “John Wick: Chapter 3.”

The third film of the $260 million dollar series will hit theaters on May 17, 2019 and will feature the return of Keanu Reeves along with the creative team behind John Wick and John Wick: Chapter 2, director Chad Stahelski and writer Derek Kolstad. Though it's not confirmed if Stahelski will Direct "Chapter 3", the executive producer confirmed back in May that both he and writer Derek Kolstad were busy penning the script for the third installment that left John excommunicado as a result of the assassin's penchant-fueled offing of High Table's Santino D'Antonio inside Continental grounds.

According to Chad Stahelski, "Wick 3" will follow the same hyper-stylized formula but attempt to expand upon the mythology created in Wick and Wick: Chapter 2 by showing "more of the intricacies of the world" and "inner workings of different parts of New York." While I won't go as far as saying Chad is selling his work short, this vision feels like a value-add given Stahelski and Kolstad's work already establishing both Continental locations, The High Table (and their global bounty), The Bowery King, and trusted Wick ally, Aurelio (John Leguizamo).

Let's not forget Thunder Road and Lionsgate purchased the script 'Ballerina' with the intention of expanding 'Wick's universe' with a female-centric assassin spinoff. Though no developments have been made, I can't think of a better way to introduce that character at a time when John could use a little help to fulfill his "kill them all" prophecy.

May 17, 2019 release date suggests shooting will begin early 2018. In the meantime, stay tuned for directing and casting news!
