'Shrek' May be Returning to the Big Screen
Shrek is one of the biggest animated properties DreamWorks has put out, no question, with the first film grossing $484.4 million worldwide and making way for three sequels in addition to spin-offs. Six years after Shrek Forever After brought the series to an end, it might just be coming back.
DreamWorks Animation is currently in the midst of being acquired by NBC Universal, and chief executive Steve Burke has revealed that more Shrek sequels is absolutely on the cards. “He is creatively going to try to help us figure out how to resurrect Shrek,” Burke said of Chris Meledandri, who is set to take creative control following the $3.8 billion acquisition of DreamWorks.
Meledandri has seen Despicable Me and Minions to the big screen, though those films probably don't weigh up against the Shrek films, in terms of style or quality. The new Shrek may be very different from the old one.
