Sony Developing 'Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse' Sequel and All-Female Spinoff
All aboard Sony's 'Spider-Verse' bandwagon.
With just weeks to go until the release of Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse, Sony Pictures announced exciting plans to build out their 'Spider-Man' universe with a sequel to the soon-to-be released animated feature along with an all new spinoff featuring a trio of Spider-Women!
Sources close to The Hollywood Reporter report that Sony has greenlit a female-centric spinoff to be written by relative newcomer, Bek Smith (Zoo) and directed by Voltron and Batman: Year One and Superman/Batman: Apocalypse’s Lauren Montgomery.
Sony has yet to release plot or character details but sources close to Deadline say the spinoff will focus on “three generations of women” who possess extraordinary spidey-powers. Of the possibilities, outlets are already speculating that one of the three super-heroines will most definitely be Gwen Stacy aka Spider-Gwen. Additionally, other characters that have been bandied about are Cassandra Web aka Madame Web and May "Mayday" Parker aka Spider-Girl, the daughter of Peter and Mary Jane Parker.
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is currently tracking at a $30-40 million domestic debut. Though we have yet to see Sony's full proof of concept, producers Amy Pascal, Phil Lord, and Christopher Miller appear confident that fans will want to see the continuing adventures of Miles Morales with Joaquin Dos Santos (Netflix’s Voltron) being tapped to direct the sequel.
Hailee Steinfeld is set to play Gwen Stacy/Spider-Gwen. No doubt, a name to keep an eye on as Sony continues to move ahead with their all-female centric spinoff.
