Star Jason Momoa and Director Corin Hardy exit 'The Crow' reboot
This headline should not surprise you.
After three terrible sequels, a cancelled television series, and a decade-long carousel of reboot speculation, it actually felt like Hardy, Momoa, and Sony were going to actually pull this off! Alas, maybe this Crow reboot was never meant to be.
Word of Sony's now scrapped The Crow reboot comes directly from the film's star, Jason Momoa. The 38-year-old sent a message to fans via Instagram with a glimpse of the actor in makeup alongside the film's director Corin Hardy:
❝I’ve waited 8 years to play this dream role. I love you@corinhardy and@sonypictures unfortunately I may have to wait 8 more. Not our team," he wrote. "But I swear I will. James O’Barr sorry to let you down I won’t on the next. This film needs to be set free. And to the fans. Sorry. I can’t play anything but what this film deserves and it needs love. I’m ready when it’s right.❞
Insiders say the project was scrapped due to creative and financial differences between producer Samuel Hadida of Davis Films and distributor Sony Pictures. Despite Sony's official announcement confirming an October 11, 2019 release, no deal was actually closed between financier Hadida and Sony - which left Sony, Momoa, and Hardy no choice but to leave the project.
While this news almost felt inevitable, it's sort of a bummer considering Hardy and Momoa felt like the right fit for this project - like it or not - and also considering this was the closest any of the Crow reboots came to an actual production date - which was due to kickoff less than five weeks from now in Budapest.
Perhaps an agreement can be made in the eleventh hour but it’s likely this iteration will repeat itself a few years from now. As the lyrics go to Jane Siberry's - It can't rain all the time - “It can’t” unless it's under the dark and mysterious cloud known as The Crow reboot.
