'Star Trek Beyond' Opens to $22M on Friday
The third film in the big-screen Star Trek franchise has opened on Friday to $22.5 million, on track for a total of up to $60 million for its first weekend.
This puts it well behind 2009's Star Trek, which opened to $75.2 million, as well as Into Darkness, which earned $70.1 million on opening weekend.
While there are already plans for a Star Trek 4, Paramount is eager for this franchise to leap off the ground in the same vein of Fast and Furious and other big franchises.
The Warner Bros. horror film, Lights Out, made on a budget of under $5 million, opened to $9.2 million on Friday, tracking for up to $21 million on opening weekend.
