'Star Trek Beyond' Wins Weekend Box Office with Solid Opening
Star Trek Beyond has opened to $59.6 million on its opening weekend, becoming the third biggest Star Trek film and the worst opener of the three most recent films shepherded by J.J. Abrams.
2009's Star Trek opened to $75.2 million, while Into Darkness opened with a take of $70.1 million in 2013. Beyond has been critically praised since opening, and won its opening weekend despite being shorter than what Paramount may have hoped for.
Ghostbusters took $21.6 million alongside Lights Out for third place while The Secret Life of Pets earned $29.3 million to finish behind Beyond.
