'Star Wars: The Last Jedi' Wins New Year's Weekend
Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is a powerful box office star. His most recent film Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle is competing against the box office juggernaut in Star Wars.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi stayed in first place over New Year's weekend. The Last Jedi brought in an estimated $68.4 million. The domestic total has reached $533 million. The worldwide total has crossed $1 billion. This is a rare film where the domestic and foreign percentage are fairly equal. Domestic total of the billion currently stands at 50.5% and the foreign total stands at 49.5%.
Jumanji is still proving as a stiff competitor. The film that stars Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Kevin Hart, and Jack Black is outperforming. Picking up an estimated $66.5 million over this holiday weekend. Due to the box office success it seems like a sequel will be in the works. According to Sony the production budget for Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle was $90 million.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi finishes the year as the highest-grossing film. Similar to Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Attendance is down at cinemas. The box office is down 2.3% since last year. Over this holiday weekend the box office had some flops in Downsizing, Father Figures, and All the Money in the World. Pitch Perfect 3 took third place at the box office followed by The Greatest Showman. Fifth place went to Blue Sky Studios film Ferdinand.
