Starz Drops Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s TV Series 'The One Percent'
Alejandro G. Iñárritu is a back-to-back Best Director Oscar winner, one of only three, and yet his ambitious television project, set up at Starz back in 2014, has been ditched by the network after receiving a straight-to-series 10 episode order.
The One Percent was set to star Hilary Swank and Ed Helms, and would follow a broken Midwest family struggling to keep their farm from financial ruin before a bizarre twist changes their lives forever.
Production as pushed back due to the rigorous schedule of The Revenant, and Starz has now pulled out as the U.S. broadcaster. Producer MRC is still committed to the show. Helms has dropped out, but has been replaced by Greg Kinnear, and Swank is still on-board.
Inarritu reportedly wants to film the series similar to how The Revenant was shot, on location and in sequence, leading to production delays. Emmanuel Lubezki, who is a three-time Oscar winner and collaborator with Inarritu, is on-board. The show is guaranteed to be utterly gorgeous, and Inarritu rarely puts a foot wrong. He would direct the first episode so as to set the tone for the series.
Production is still set to kick off in the coming months despite Starz dropping out. Hopefully, another network will pick it up quickly. With streamers Amazon and Netflix the big spenders currently, it could likely land on one of those. Of course, there's always HBO.
