Starz's 'American Gods' Aims to Enlarge Female Roles and Differ from Neil Gaiman's Novel
American Gods debuts next year, but it already has a trailer and plenty of buzz surrounding it. The series, still in production, details a world where the old gods are threatened by the new ones, who represent things such as greed, celebrity, drugs and alcohol.
Creators Bryan Fuller and Michael Green guarantee that book-lovers will enjoy the show. "If you loved it in the book, it will show up in the series." In addition, the show will expand on the novel's female roles, as the book is what Fuller described as a "sausage party."
Emily Browning's character, Laura Moon, is one such character. "That was the character that for us was fleshed out to a good extent in the novel, and yet we got to pick up that baton and run with it," said Fuller, who noted that there's an episode that is told from Laura's point of view.
"Once we had Emily Browning sharing that costume, she kind of opened up even larger, and we could just see where she was going," Green added. Fuller answers diversity, which was never a question at all. "In order to do the book, you have to cast the character who was written, which is someone who was not white."
