Tarantino's ninth film finds a home; First plot details emerge
News about Tarantino's ninth film comes after the death of 83-year-old cult leader Charles Manson who died Sunday of natural causes
Deadline Hollywood announced that Sony Pictures has secured worldwide rights to Quentin Tarantino’s untitled ninth film. The deal comes after Disney, Fox , Warner Bros and Universal attempted to gain exclusive worldwide rights after the Oscar-winning filmmaker parted ways with longtime distribution partner Miramax and The Weinstein Company. Terms of Tarantino's deal have not been disclosed but are said to include a production budget of close to $100 million, first-dollar gross and final cut on the film.
Initial reports confirmed Tarantino's film is said to have heart and a strong commercial appeal. A new source close to Vanity Fair reveals the story will feature Charles Manson and Sharon Tate as a backdrop but focus on a television actor and his stunt double who are looking for their next project.
"Set in Los Angeles in the summer of 1969, Tarantino’s upcoming movie, according to a source who read the script, focuses on a male TV actor who’s had one hit series and his [sic] looking for a way to get into the film business. His sidekick—who’s also his stunt double—is looking for the same thing. The horrific murder of Sharon Tate and four of her friends by Charles Manson’s cult of followers serves as a backdrop to the main story."
Though casting decisions have not been made, multiple outlets report Tarantino has met with Margot Robbie for the role of Sharon Tate, and is eyeing two male leads with none other than Tom Cruise being one of them. Earlier reports also indicate Tarantino wrote the film with specific roles for previous collaborators Brad Pitt, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Samuel L. Jackson.
The film will be set in Los Angeles and begin production in mid-2018 for a 2019 release.
More to come once casting decisions have been made!
