Moviemaking is one of the hardest art forms there is, throw in the business side and it becomes even more daunting.
With 2013 now in the history books as one of the highest profitable years in cinema history, some films didn't quite leave their mark on the record breaking year. With film budgets constantly on the increase to meet the appeal of CGI and special effects, the demand to return a profit can sometimes cripple a films potential and marketability. If you hit the mark, the film will sky rocket in it's mass appeal bringing in millions upon millions, as for some, the film will bomb, leaving huge losses and egg on its face.
What defines a flop is simply box office returns. In some cases, the term "flop" doesn't necessarily mean the film is total garbage. It's box office performance does hinder it's chances of breaking out of the chokehold, but that doesn't mean you the viewer should completely avoid the film like the plague.
