The Connecting Thread of the Star Wars Saga
With Star Wars about to take over the world on the big screen, with a new film of some kind every year for the foreseeable (and probably unforeseeable) future, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy offers an explanation of what the distinction between the separate properties will be.
"The saga films focus on the Skywalker family" Kennedy says, saga films being the core trilogies (the originals, the prequels, and the new one kicking off with Force Awakens).
"The stories follow a linear narrative that connects to the previous six films. The Force Awakens follows Return of the Jedi and continues that generational story".
Weaving between the core trilogy releases of episodes 7, 8 and 9 will be the anthology films, such as Rogue One.
"The Anthology films offer opportunities to explore fresh characters, new storylines and a variety of genres inside the Star Wars universe", Kennedy continues.
Whether the thread being the Skywalker family is meant to be taken quite as literally as it sounds is up for debate. Considering surnames have yet to be revealed for many characters, its hard to imagine that piece of information would be so obviously spoiled so close to release now.
The Force Awakens arrives December 18.
