The Hateful Eight Box Office Can't Keep up with Previous Tarantino Films
In its first weekend of wide release, The Hateful Eight earned $16.2 million despite a lukewarm reception from critics and fans alike.
This box office tally stands as Quentin Tarantino's lowest result since Jackie Brown's $9.3 million in 1997. Inglorious Basterds ($38 million), Django Unchained ($30.1 million), Kill Bill: Vol. 1 ($22.1 million) and Kill Bill: Vol. 2 ($25 million) all debuted ahead of Tarantino's panoramic western.
To be fair to The Hateful Eight, it is competing with the return of Star Wars, picking up the dregs of fans that have already seen The Force Awakens or are, by some miracle, disinterested in it. Projections expected The Hateful Eight to reach at least $20 million, a projection that it clearly fell short of.
