'The Martian' Extended Cut May Arrive Later This Year
Last year, rumours circled that there might be an extended cut of Ridley Scott's hugely successful adaptation floating around in an office somewhere.
And while his extended cuts are hit and miss, there would understandably be plenty of curiosity surrounding an extended runtime tracking Matt Damon's saga on Mars. The theatrical edition is two and a half hours of briskly paced drama and humour, but in some circles more is better.
The Digital Bits attended a forum at Fox titled The Journey to Mars 101, in which the studio confirmed that an extended cut is in production at Fox. While it isn't on the release schedule, it's likely there will be an extended edition hitting blu-ray shelves later this year.
In an earlier review with Collider, Scott confirmed that one cut had 20 minutes of extra footage. "... the film was too long at two hours and 45, but it was enjoyable. It easily could be a Blu-ray alternative version. Funnily enough, I was sad to see go the inevitable question, as we got intimate details about how you grow food and what do you use for fertilizer, you have to ask the question: when he’s on the road, how and when does he do the necessary?"
