The Revenant Performs Powerfully at Specialty Box Office
Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's The Revenant grossed $450K in its second week, a powerful performance given its presence in just four theaters ahead of its wide release. Over its two-week narrow release, it's accumulated $1.3M.
The weekend's PTA (per-theater-average) of $112,500 is the third best of any 2015 release, down 5.4% from the film's Christmas weekend opening of $118,640. Topping 2015's PTA for limited release was Steve Jobs' $130,380. We can take the numbers, then, with a grain of salt, considering the Jobs pic bombed when it reached out for wider release.
The Revenant is up from last years Oscar award-winning best picture Birdman (also by Inarritu), which had a $106,099 PTA after a similar initial release. The Revenant expands its locations on January 8.
The film has been met with critical acclaim thus far, being praised as an ambitious and satisfying cinematic experience. Its backstory behind the scenes is just as riveting as the anticipation and reception for the film, with many stories having come out of the torturous conditions on set.
